This journey begins in eastern Mongolia, where you’ll follow in the footsteps of the Great Mongolian Empire’s founders, exploring hidden historical sites connected to Chinggis Khan. Next, venture west to the Altai Mountains, home to ancient heritage, pristine landscapes, and authentic nomadic experiences. From there, travel south to the Gobi Desert, a land of dinosaurs and elusive snow leopards, uncovering its fascinating natural history.
Throughout the trip, Dr. Christopher Atwood will provide insightful lectures, enriching your experience as you engage in fishing, trekking, and horseback or camel riding. Accommodations include expedition-style tents and traditional gers, fully immersing you in Mongolia’s adventure.
Trip Highlights:
✔️ The empire-era "Human-Stones" (Khün-Chuluu) in the classic eastern steppe of Sukhbaatar Province;
✔️ The ancestral sites of Chinggis Khan in the lush, beautiful landscapes of Khentii Province;
✔️ Khovd Province, nestled in the Altai Mountains—meet and stay with the true nomadic families;
✔️ The legendary dinosaur fossil sites in the far southern South Gobi Province.
About the Leader:
![]() | Dr. Christopher Atwood, a frequent visitor to Mongolia since his first trip in 1989, enjoys exploring the countryside during his free time. He is the Chair and Professor of Mongolian and Chinese Frontier and Ethnic History at the University of Pennsylvania. His current research focuses on reconstructing lost Mongolian sources from the Mongol Empire and developing a new framework for understanding Central Eurasian nomads’ social history. Dr. Atwood has authored several notable works, including Young Mongols and Vigilantes in Inner Mongolia’s Interregnum Decades, The Encyclopedia of Mongolia and the Mongol Empire, and an English translation of The Secret History of Mongolia. He is a prominent scholar in Mongolian studies, has made significant contributions. |
Brief Itinerary:
Day 1 (May 30) - Arrival in Ulaanbaatar city;
Day 2 (May 31) - Drive to Sukhbaatar Province in Eastern Mongolia;
Day 3 (June 1) - Sukhbaatar Province / Altan Ovoo / Dariganga;
Day 4 (June 2) - Drive to Batnorov Village, Khentii Province;
Day 5 (June 3) - Visit Baldan Bereeven Monastery, Khentii Province;
Day 6 (June 4) - Drive back to Ulaanbaatar;
Day 7 (June 5) - Fly to Hovd Province in Western Mongolia;
Day 8-9 (June 6-7) - Explore the nomadic way of living;
Day 10 (June 8) - Visit Dorgon Lake;
Day 11 (June 9) - Fly back to Ulaanbaatar;
Day 12 (June 10) - Fly to Gobi Desert;
Day 13 (June 11) - Explore dinosaur fossils at Tugrugiin Shiree/Flaming Cliffs;
Day 14 (June 12) - Fly back to Gobi Desert;
Day 15 (June 13) - Departure.
